Just past the banana spider—I would prefer it if you did not bite me—there was a fern shaped like the plastic whiskers used to indicate available burial plots. Despite the humidity in Florida, I hadn’t expected to see a fern, fronds stretching and uncurled, each tendril so green I imagined it must have never missed a necessary nutrient.
